Episode 45: Gore Galore at Midsummer Scream

Il-wey! Earlier this month, I attended Midsummer Scream that was held at Long Beach Convention Center.  It was my first time attending this horror-focused event expected to attract over 30,000 fans over the weekend of August 3 and 4.  Arriving shortly before the doors opened, there were quite a long line already, but the queue moved quickly.

The convention included over 350 vendors laid out in an L-shaped configuration. Attendees could feast their eyes on art, toys, collectibles, jewelry, clothing, and other assorted horrific trinkets – there was likely something for everyone.  Scares could be had at the themed haunted houses located in the Hall of Shadows, which showcased Tiki Terror. There was also a stage with entertaining shows as well as food vendors.  The show also marked the 50thanniversary of Disneyland’s Haunted Mansion and the 30thanniversary of Tales of the Crypt.  In addition, this was the fourth year in which Midsummer Scream partnered with Kitten Rescue Los Angeles by hosting the Black Cat Lounge where attendees could meet and bond with one of the many young felines up for adoption.  I was hoping to take a peek, but I probably would have been tempted.

This show was ripe for mummy sightings and I was not disappointed. Many mummies were either a direct likeness of Karloff’s 1932 version or inspired by his portrayal.  Sadly, the one mummy I would have like to have seen/met was puppeteer Michael Oosterom, who also voiced the sarcastic mummy cat Rankle from the Netflix show, The Curious Creations of Christine McConnell. Below, I showcase many of the mummy products I came across and, in some cases, purchased.

This was a fun show and I am definitely planning to go again, probably for both days since there was so much to see and interesting panel programming that I did not get to attend this year.  If you live in the SoCal region, or have the means to travel, and consider yourself an aficionado of horror, then Midsummer Scream is a must-do event!
