Episode 38: Joyous Holidays!
Il-wey! The above image is a vintage postcard depicting an Egyptian harpist. Part of a larger scene, the harpist performs before a pharaoh and is part of a religious scene found in the tomb of Ramses III (c. 1184 -1153 B.C.) located in the Valley of the Kings.
The harp is one of the oldest musical instruments and depictions of its angled shape can be found as early as the Old Kingdom wall paintings. With music one of the universal languages, it seems fitting that the harpist herald warm wishes for a joyous holiday season. And in honor of the holidays, I’ll be taking a short break and will return on Monday, January 7 with a new musing.
Until then, senebti!
